Virgil graduated from the San Antonio Police Department Academy in December 2002 and launched his law enforcement career in patrol. Over the next nine years, he built a strong operational foundation as a patrol officer, patrol rifleman, and shotgun operator, with additional assignments in the Tactical Response Unit and Gang Unit.
Virgil served for 15 years with the SAPD Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team, rising to the role of lead breacher before retiring in 2025. His responsibilities included developing warrant raid plans and breaching plans for high-risk and critical incidents. As a member of the SWAT training cadre, he trained operators in firearms, less-lethal tactics, and breaching operations, and served as the lead breaching instructor for SAPD SWAT schools and for outside agencies. As lead breacher, he played a key role in selecting and equipping breaching tools for patrol and helped develop a comprehensive patrol breaching program. He also led SWAT breaching instruction in shotgun breaching, manual and hydraulic breaching tools, and Rook operations. His approach reflects a simple operational principle: without effective entry, the operation cannot move forward.
