This 40-hour course is for basic peace officer certified individuals and will cover the principles and fundamentals of crisis (hostage) negotiations with emphasis on becoming proficient with Active Listening Skills through in-class practice.
Major Topics Covered:
Incident response and working as a team,
Intelligence gathering and use,
Hostage welfare,
Dealing with demands,
Negotiating with those in psychiatric crisis,
Suicide assessment snd intervention.
Case debriefs from the instructor’s experience, in-class scenarios, and lecture will be the primary forms of instruction and learning. Learning will also be assessed via written exam and a scenario on the last day.
