PATROL MARKSMAN LPVP
The purpose of the Patrol Marksman course is to demonstrate the capabilities of the patrol rifle at intermediate ranges and how these capabilities can be an asset to patrol officers in deadly force encounters. The most common employment of the patrol rifle is to contain a potentially violent suspect at a standoff distance well outside the normal effective range of a patrol officer’s standard handgun. These longer distances where the rifle is most often used and needed are often near or beyond the 50 yard limit that most training occurs. Officer inexperience at these greater distances can lead to excess shots required by officers. Those excess shots will often either fail to stop the suspect with poor shot placement, allowing him to further engage fellow officers and innocents, or that miss the target completely and potentially injure or kill bystanders, despite the rifle being more than capable of delivering accurate fire at these distances. Using vision-enhancing optical rifle sights, stable supported and unsupported positions, and precision marksmanship fundamentals, the officer can deliver fewer rounds with greater incapacitating effect on target. Officers will focus on first-round hits and be held accountable for every shot fired throughout the course. Officers will leave the course with a much better understanding of their personal capabilities and rifle’s capabilities along with the ability to deliver accurate precision rifle fire at nearly any distance normally encountered within the city.
