Basic Urban Marksman

Course Details:
The TTPOA will host a 55 hour Basic Urban Marksman Course at DFW Airport on May 3-7, 2010.  The lead instructor for this course will be Officer Bruce Fowler with the DFW Airport SWAT team.  Officer Fowler has instructor this course for the past 10 years both locally in the DFW Area and across the state of Texas.  Officer Fowler has 20 years of law enforcement experience, and has servced as a marksman on the DFW Airport SWAT team for the past 19 years.  Officer Fowler will be assisted by other DFW Airport SWAT marksman along with marksman from other teams in the DFW Area including Irving, Bedford, and Dallas. 
 
Course Topics:
 

The course will consist of classroom instruction on:

  • Legal issues,
  • fundamentals of marksmanship,
  • bullet trajectory,
  • environmental factors,
  • determining proper windage and slope,
  • shot placement,
  • proper use of scope,
  • equipment selection,
  • record keeping,
  • range estimation, 
  • sniper selection.   

 

Range Instruction will consist of:

  • cold bore shots,
  • moving targets,
  • positional shooting,
  • shooting through glass,
  • range estimation, 
  • known distance range shooting up to 500 yards,
  • stress shooting,
  • record keeping,
  • low light shooting  
 
Prerequisites

This course is restricted to current law enforcement and active duty military personnel only.  Students should be prepared to show their department or government issued ID upon request. 

At the conclusion of the course, all students will be required to successfully shoot a qualification course of fire in order to obtain a certificate of completion.

 
Required Equipment

Students will need to bring the following items and equipment: 

  • a scoped rifle capable of shooting a one inch group or better at 100 yards,
  • rifle sling,
  • 400 rounds of match grade ammo,
  • shooting mat,
  • log book,
  • rain gear,
  • calculator, 
  • spotting scope (optional).
